She came to SF Bay Area in 1990 after obtaining a MS degree from University of Antwerp. Prior to join New York life in 1994, she worked as a research associate at PTRL West, acquired by Eurofins. Before coming to the west, Joanna was a lab teaching assistant at Shaanxi Normal University, Xi'an, China.

As a committed member of her community, she attends the Episcopal church of St. Matthew and served on its vestry board.  She is a volunteer at Sustainable San Mateo County, a civic organization for Economy, Environment and Equity.
